Finest Quality London Stock Bricks
London stock brick are the most common and widely used construction material used all over London in bulk. These stock bricks are the main building blocks of the building structure and houses. They are termed 'stock brick' based on their manufacturing procedure. This indicates that they are common types of bricks that are stocked in locality or in the case of London yellow stock bricks, made of genuine homemade clay. This is done with the help of a stock which is a kind of mould for shaping the bricks, a stock board is basically an iron-faced blocked and the brick fits over this stock until it completely fills it and is then cut off according to the desired size and shape which is then sun baked, dried and fired.
The London yellow stock bricks are the number one quality bricks that are being used all over London for construction and decorative purposes. Initially, lime mortar was used to keep these bricks held in stacks horizontally one over the other. The lime mortar is comparatively a weaker material due to its softness. Nowadays, the home builders more commonly make use of the cement based mortar which can be easily cleaned off from a second hand brick to make them good enough and presentable or re-use in construction work. These second hand stock bricks might not have the desired mechanical properties and dimensional stability and may not even have as good aesthetics or be used for face work of a building, but nevertheless they can still be used for the internal construction work of buildings and pavements. These stock bricks may also discolour from yellow or brown to a greyish black colour by deposition of soot over them with time and also in areas where air pollution is quite high. This can also be a factor why second hand bricks cannot be used for face work. The deposition of soot can be avoided by maintenance of the buildings constructed by stock bricks at regular intervals to keep them renewed.
The London handmade yellow bricks have good mechanic properties like strength and durability and are fire resistant and weather proof. They are also more compact and less porous due to which water seeping does not occur as the building gets old. They have evenness in size and shape and a smooth texture due to which they have good dimensional stability. The main factor of the London stock brick which makes them desirable by home builders is the unique colour. The yellow colour of London yellow stock bricks give the construction building and house a very soft subtle and unique appearance and give them an old classy vintage look. This is very attractive. They can also be painted in other colours and red stock bricks are also available but the one in yellow is the most commonly used stock brick all over London since the 19th century when they were first discovered. These bricks were more porous when they were laid by lime mortar but by the invent of cement mortar this problem is also eliminated and they are the most widely used stock brick all over London.
